Joshimath

The little town of Joshimath is one of the most splendid places to be if you wish to access a number of beautiful destinations in the Chamoli district. Earlier known as Jyotirmath, the town serves as a gateway to popular tourist destinations such as Auli, Valley of flowers trek, Badrinath, Mana, Hemkund, etc. The pilgrimage town is situated at an elevation of 1,890 mts above mts above the sea level in the Chamoli district. Just below the beautiful town of Joshimath the holy rivers of Dhauliganga and Alaknanda combine at the convergence of the river Vishnuprayag. The town provides beautiful views of the peaks of Hathi Parvat, Kamet and various other Himalayan mountains. In the ancient scriptures the holy town of Joshimath was described as Kartikeyapura and its name was put up after Kartikeya, the God of Katyuri Kings and Lord Shiva’s son. Among the many different attractions of Joshimath is a temple devoted to Narasimha, Lord Vishnu’s incarnation. Many temples are located nearby that are devoted to Gaurishankar, Surya, Naudevi, Ganesha and Hanuman. The holy town of Joshimath is among the four primitive Hindu matha (monasteries), which was built by Adi Guru Sri Shankaracharya earlier in the 8th century. During winter months Joshimath is used as a home for Lord Badri by the devotees, whose idol gets carried from the Badrinath temple to Joshimath.

How to Reach

By Road: Joshimath is connected well with motorable roads with major destinations of the Kumaun and Garhwal region. Buses are available towards Srinagar and Rishikesh from ISBT Kashmiri Gate and one can easily get taxis from major towns of Uttarakhand like Srinagar, Chamoli, Dehradun, Rishikesh, etc.

By Train: The closest Railway station to the town of Joshimath is the Rishikesh railway station. The railway station lies at a total distance of 250 kms on the NH58 highway. The town of Rishikesh is well linked with major railway networks and other Indian destinations.

By Air: The closest airport to the town of Joshimath is the Jolly Grant Airport which lies at a distance of around 272 kms. The airport is well linked with Delhi and other major Indian cities. Upon arrival to the airport one can also hire taxis to Joshimath.
