Nand Prayag

The famous town of Nand Prayag marks the confluence of the Mandakini and Alaknada rivers at an altitude of 914 mts above the sea level. More often trekkers would find their way till the site of Tapovan across the Kunwari pass, which is on the way to Roopkund. The beautiful spot of Nandaprayag has become a major tourist destination since the years.

It is mainly said that the confluence is named after the virtuous Raja Nanda who performed a widespread fire purification ceremony in the town. The Nandaprayag is located at the confluence of the angelic water of Nandakini River and Alaknanda River. Nandakini River is emerging from the base of Nanda Devi Peak. The town of Nandaprayag was once known as the capital town of the Yadu Kingdom. According to tales a huge Yagna was performed by Raja Nanda at a rock and it was later on used as the foundation of Nand temple which is located in the Nandprayag district.

Various Hindu sacred texts and mythological scriptures state that it was promised to Raja Nanda as a boon of son of Lord Vishnu. Unluckily, Devki was also granted the same promise boon, who was the imprisoned sister of Kansa, a cruel and tyrant king. Later on the gogs brought up a great solution to this issue, which stated that Lord Vishnu would be born as Lord Krishna to Devki but he wouldn’t be allowed to bring up through Yasodha, who was Raja Nanda’s wife. Nandaprayag town is also the Nagar Panchayat for the town of Chamoli district in the Garhwal division.
