Dev Prayag

Situated in the district of Tehri Garhwal the town of Devprayag marks the convergence of Bhagirathi River and Alaknanda. The town of Devprayag is located in the district of Tehri Garhwal but some of the parts under it might be under Pauri Garhwal district. Devprayag is situated at the Badrinath-Rishikesh highway and is 71kms away from the town of Rishikesh. Devprayag is also known as the seat to the Pundits of the Badrinath Dham. The term Devprayag means Goldy confluence and the word “Dev” would mean god and “Prayag would mean confluence.

Travellers can find a lot of things to enjoy in Devprayag with its divine and serene natural beauty and it is also believed that King Dushratha and Lord Rama did their penance in here. The ancient temple of Raghunathji is built just above the river confluence through large rocks and it is also believed that the temple premises is more than ten thousand years old. The town’s entire structure was changed through an earthquake in 1803, but later on it was repaired. The major confluence has Brahma Kund at the Alaknanda River and Vashisht Kund on the Bhagirathi River.

Visitors can also try the little water spring which is called Baitshaila and it is known that getting a bath is a good treatment for leprosy. Devprayag town can be visited at any time of the year. However, it would be best for avoiding monsoons when the surface becomes too muddy and the roads are prone to landslides. Even with its little elevation of 618 mts, the town is endowed with abundant natural beauty. According to many beliefs, King Dushrath and his son Lord Rama did penance in this site. The town’s main temple is the ‘Raghunath Temple’, which is devoted to Lord Rama.

By Air: The nearest Airport to the town is Devprayag is the Jolly Grant at Dehradun which is located at distance of around 91 kms. The Jolly Grant Airport remains connected with Delhi and other major cities as well through daily flights.

By Rail: The nearest railway station in Devprayag is at Rishikesh which is located at a distance of around 72kms before the town of Devprayag. Rishikesh is well linked with railway networks of all major Indian cities.

By Road: The town of Devprayag is linked well with motorable roads with a number of destinations of Uttarakhand and northern Indian states. Buses are also available to Rishikesh and Devprayag that one can catch through ISBT Kashmiri Gate, Delhi.
