Yamunotri

Being the source of Yamuna river, the town of Yamunotri also remains one of the sites of the renowned Char Dham Yatra. The holy town is situated at a breathtaking elevation of 3293 mts above the sea level and has its location in the district of Uttarkashi. The place is completely surrounded through mountains on different sides and rests in closeness with the Indo-China border.

At the northern side of the town visitors can the huge mountain of Bandarpunch with an elevation of 6315 mts above the sea level. To reach the town visitors need to go through a simple day’s trek of 6km from the town of Hanuman Chatti and a 4km walk from the site of Janki Chatti. While being on the way tourists would be mesmerized by the beautiful surroundings with dense forests and rugged peaks typically dominating the site. Travellers can also hire palanquins and horses to reach the site. Due to the harsh cold climate of the town with mostly snow-covered parts one should carry heavy or light woolen clothes while traveling across the region.

The temple of Yamunotri typically remains the very first stop-over in the route of the Char Dham Yatra. The main temple of town is devoted to the Goddess Yamuna. With the large number of devotees the shrine is mostly visited during the months between May and October. According to legends, the site of Yamunotri has a special place as the home of an ancient sage, Asit Muni. For a traveller there are a number of attractions such as the Yamunotri temple which was made in the late nineteenth century by Maharani Guleria.

How to Reach

By Road: The town of Yamunotri isn’t connected directly through highways. The town of Hanuman Chatti is accessible through motorable roads and from here on the short trek of 6kms commences to Yamunotri. Buses can be boarded through ISBT Kashmiri Gate, Delhi to Dehradun and Rishikesh.

By Train: The closest railway stations to the holy town are Dehradun and Rishikesh. The railway station Dehradun is located 175 kms away from Yamunotri and the Rishikesh station is about 200 kms away from the Holy site.

By Air: The closest airport to the town of Yamunotri is the Jolly Grant Airport which is located at a distance of about 210kms. The airport is well connected to major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, etc. through frequent flights.
